Do you ever feel like you're stuck in a rut? Maybe it's more of a crevasse, or possibly even an entire valley of nothing but the same? I guarantee, you're not the only one! Just yesterday, I went to one of my favorite restaurants (Monkey Bridge in Seattle, WA) and caught myself about to order the exact same banh mi (a Vietnamese baguette sandwich) and salad rolls I do every time. And I go there at least 2-3 times a week!
As ruts, go, it's not a bad one -- in fact, it's both tasty and healthy! However, my banh mi rut is a symptom of a larger problem that we all share: a tendency to try and limit pain in our lives by limiting change (and therefore the risk that this change will be negative rather than positive).
I'm here to tell you that not only does this limiting in our lives not work to reduce pain, but in fact increases it. Although it may feel safer to never try something different on life's menu, in fact we are denying our authentic selves by not allowing ourselves the chance to find out what we are capable of.
In the spirit of finding out what we are all capable of, this blog was born. I hope that you will join me in discovering how we can mix it up in our lives, and share with me the excitement of becoming a more authentic and fulfilled person. Every day I will bring a post to you to support inviting positive change into your life; ideas on how to break out of your rut (banh mi or otherwise), biographies of famous and not-so-famous rule breakers, anecdotes about my own search for authenticity, and so much more. I look forward to this journey together, and to Mixing It Up!
(Oh, and the mango tofu salad I ended up having at Monkey Bridge? It was delicious!)
