How you use your space can be just as important as what's in it. Many people live in traditional Western houses with a living room, bedroom, bathroom, etc; however, many more people the world over live in studio apartments, one room houses, yurts, and myriad other variations on the home. So while you are mixing it up with your spring cleaning, why not take a moment to reflect on how you use the space you live in?
Understanding what you use your space for is important for two reasons:
1. How you use it will reflect what goes in it. This seems obvious, but how many people do you know with piles of mail on the kitchen table, or dishes all over the living room? Decide what you want to do with the room, and then look at what is in it that doesn't fit.
2. What goes in it reflects how you use it. Not as obvious, but just as important, is the reverse of the first reason. If you have a TV in your living room, you will likely use your living room for video games, movies, and television shows rather than for board games or cocktail parties. Consider what already is in your rooms, and how it affects what you do there. Do you like it, or would you rather change?
When you look at your home, you may find that you have spaces that you can repurpose entirely to better suit your needs. My parents turned a spare bedroom into a "creativity room" and workspace for my dad, and I did the same at my house! Today, mix it up and reflect for a while on the spaces you live in (or work in!).
